Hi Melody :) love the blog. as a young PR major with desires of working in the fashion industry, i was curious to know where you studied?

kind of wondering if a fashion degree is beneficial to the field i want to pursue.
also, any word of advice for a young freshmen who has NO experience, minimal journalistic skills, but BIG DREAMS?

hi love! i studied sociology w/an emphasis is popular & hiphop culture (got to read The NEW HNIC, HipHop America, have Tricia Rose as a professor, & watch Chris Rock stand-up as part of my studies ;)) at UC Santa Cruz.

a fashion degree isn’t necessary to do PR. if your school offers a communications major, then that’s a good start. but reeeeally, no specific major will get you in. i mean, i studied sociology w/no intentions to pursue social work, i just enjoyed the subject.

whatever you study, my best advice to you is to intern during your college summers and after college, network and get your name out there. i was fortunate enough to have built my own network through my own blog, styling for Lucky Mag, being an editor for thisislavie.com, & starting out in entertainment pr. from there i started working with jbc and later got into fashion pr. the rest is history!

so in a nutshell, a fashion degree isn’t necessary, a communications major helps (but you can get away with pursuing another major), interning is crucial, being able to write is an advantage, & networking and making a name for yourself is key.

I feel a certain joy when i see these pictures come across my computer screen “White Sands debut their new collection: MBFW” I immediately want to call Mel and Jenn and tell them what i saw. I don’t know if this is excitement due to the fact that i just started, but i hope it never goes away. I have a lot of dues to pay, but for now lets throw on that Drake “Closer To My Dreams”.
